Tonight was one of those nights when the last thing I wanted to do was cook dinner. If it weren't for this challenge, I would have put a pizza in the oven & called it a day.
Dinner Day4: Hot chicken bacon sandwich with fresh cilantro & lettuce, peas and squash soup.
We visited the Mages Gardens II this evening. This is a three-generation operation run by Bruce and Nancy Mages along with their daughter Amanda Mages-Zupke and her three young children. They have about five different gardens that they expand, rotate and add to each year. These folk are serous vegetable growers. They have easily have 100 tomato plants with 8 or 9 different varieties. Their gardens are full of beats, peas, garlic, bell, and hot peppers, squash, gourds, pumpkins, watermelons, rhubarb, a variety of beans, potatoes, sweet corn and more.
They sent us home with some garlic scapes, radishes, rhubarb and a variety of their delicious canned items including pizza sauce, pickles, blackberry rhubarb jam, hot pickled veggies, hot raspberry rhubarb jam and a favorite of mine sweet hot peppers.
Tonight I tried my hand at making yogurt. Yes, you read that right I said yogurt. I’d been interested in trying to make yogurt for a while and this project gave me the perfect opportunity. It is a process and it is not finished yet. I am at the point where I wait patiently for seven hours followed by a good eight hours of chilling in the refrigerator.
